McMaster Stands for Safety
(Above: Ball Construction’s Claire Morwood, Jason Ball and Rob Ellis discuss the importance of COR Worker Safety Certification.)
The soon to open McMaster University Health Campus will not only be one of downtown Hamilton’s showcase buildings, it also represents dedication to construction safety.
On September 30, 2014, over 120 construction and trade workers gathered on site to celebrate over 250,000 hours of construction work with zero lost work days to date.
David Frame from the OGCA was on hand with Jason Ball, President of Ball Construction and Ball V.P. Gary Hauck to welcome Rob Ellis, President of MySafeWork.com who spoke to the workers about their commitment to safety.
Bordered by King Street to the north, Bay Street to the west and Main Street to the south, the tight foot print of the building left no room for error in safety to the workers and the general public.
As a proud COR safety certified company, Ball Construction continues to lead the national charge for construction safety. To help reinforce this message the OGCA and Ball partner with Rob Ellis (seen here wearing his Jersey of Courage) to have workers sign Team Canada Jerseys showing their commitment to total project safety.
While on a walk though supervisor, Claire Morwood pointed out some features of the construction challenges and impressive features of the beautiful new health campus including:
- Green roof terraced gardens bordered with Brazilian hardwood decks
- 4th floor to ceiling green wall
- Granite and stainless clad main stairway
- Pre-patterned exterior copper cladding
- Structural glazing with stainless steel trim at main entrance
- Lobby bleachers in common area covered with Brazilian hardwood
- Atrium skylight illuminates polished sandstone and cherry wood panels.

The Gold Seal project was managed by Senior Site Supervisors Claire Morwood and Al Dobson and is an important part of the revitalization of downtown Hamilton.
Suzanne Johnson, Ball Construction’s H&S Coordinator thanks the McMaster site workers for their diligence to the COR program while flanked by Jason Ball and Rob Ellis.
The lunch time event wrapped up with delicious wood fired pizza made on site by Bread Head of Kitchener and a chance for management to show their appreciation to their hardworking teams on site.
Workers sign jerseys of courage.
