Update on New Peterborough Arena and Aquatics Complex
Ball is the lead construction firm for a new arena and aquatics complex in Peterborough, designed to meet the immediate and future recreational needs of this dynamic, growing community. Phase 1 of the project includes:
- A twin pad arena with 500 seats on each pad
- An elevated walking/running track
- 12 team change rooms and 3 officials rooms
- A team training area
- Office/administration/customer service space for city staff
- Office leased space
- A concession area
- Two multipurpose rooms
- Public washrooms, elevator and storage
- Landscaping and parking
The budget for Phase 1 is approximately $58 million. The project contemplates rolling out Phase 2 in the future to build a competition-standard 25-metre, 8-lane pool, warm-up therapy pool and changerooms. Phase 2 has not been budgeted or approved at this time; however, the project is being designed to be ready to proceed with Phase 2 if funding becomes available.
When it opens, the new facility will enhance recreational and cultural opportunities in the community, replacing ice/floor pad availability that was lost with the closure of the single-pad Northcrest Arena in April 2020 and replacing the DelaFosse Branch of the Library that was closed in March 2020.
Project construction started in October 2022 and to date the storm water retention system has been installed and ground improvements in the form of geopiers have been completed. Work on the concrete foundations is ongoing and steel erection is slated for June. Ball estimates that the project will be completed in fall 2024.
