The 2017 Golden Trowel: The Concrete Floor Constructed by Ball Construction at the Steve Kerr Memorial Complex in Listowel, Ontario, Canada has been honoured as The Most Flat and Level of the Year in the category NHL Size Ice Rink with Dry Shake (17,000 ft2).
Project Details
New Construction of a 63,500 SF recreation centre. Phase 1 included replacing the existing arena with a regulation sized ice surface with 800 seats, six dressing rooms, 2 referee rooms, 1 junior B dressing room, 2-lane indoor walking track, a 2,500 SF community meeting space with full commercial kitchen, miscellaneous mechanical, electrical, ice-resurfacer, refrigeration and storage rooms, outdoor soccer fields, green spaces and ample room for future expansion.
Ball utilized block and precast construction and insulated metal panels.
The project was completed under budget and on schedule and achieved a GVCA Building Excellence Award and the very prestigious “Golden Trowel Award for the Most Flat and Level of the Year” in the category of NHL sized rinks.
The Challenge
The project site was an old farmer’s field and we discovered the soils did not meet the standards for bearing capacity and not suitable to build on. We had to sub excavate the entire building footprint and import engineered fill before we could even start the foundations or think about pouring a rink slab. This task needed to be complete quickly in order to maintain the project schedule and budgets.
The Solution
Many months of pre-planning and design meetings were held with the team in an effort to minimize costs and we were able to offer many value-engineering savings for constructability and efficiencies.
