Project Details

The groundbreaking of this of this multi-functional recreational facility was in March 2022 at
the intersection of Hutchison and Queens Bush Roads in the Township of Wellesley, Ontario.
Spanning 78,500 square feet, this state-of-the-art complex is designed to cater to a wide range
of community needs and interests. Key amenities include an NHL-sized ice rink, which can also
accommodate curling, with seating for over 500 spectators and eight dedicated dressing rooms.
In addition to the ice rink, the facility features a comprehensive fitness center, mini-sticks area,
gymnasium, weight room, walking track, and community center. Outdoor spaces include two
soccer fields, an outdoor play area, a skateboard park, expansive green spaces, and an
additional walking track—all designed to support the physical activity and well-being of local
residents.

Challenges and Ball’s Solutions

Energy efficiency was a key priority in the planning and design stages of the project. The facility
incorporates several industry-leading, sustainable features, including solar panels, rooftop heat
pump units, electric vehicle charging stations, LED lighting throughout, soft starters for
refrigeration motors, and a heat-recapturing system in the refrigeration plant. These
innovations not only enhance energy efficiency but also contribute to a more comfortable
indoor environment for areas such as arena seating.

Given the high demand from the community, there was interest in opening the arena before
full construction was completed. In response, a phased opening was successfully executed in
November 2023, allowing partial occupancy for up to 300 visitors. This enabled the community
to access the arena, change rooms, and washroom facilities while engaging in activities
including figure skating, hockey, and curling. The Ball team, along with the project consultants,
worked collaboratively to ensure the timely completion of this phase.

Health Care Center

A new Health Care Centre, also part of the complex, was completed in February 2024. The
center offers a wide range of health services, including examination rooms, counseling offices,
dentistry facilities, and chiropody examination rooms, further enhancing the community’s
access to essential services.

Project Completion and Community Impact

To mark the completion of the project in December 2025, Ball employees took part in a
celebratory event at the Wellesley Recreation Complex, enjoying a scrimmage game of hockey
on the newly constructed rink. The event provided a unique opportunity for the construction
team to personally experience the facility they had helped bring to life.

Ball is proud to have contributed to a project that will have a lasting, positive impact on the
Wellesley community. The new recreation center will provide residents with a range of
recreational and health services for years to come, fostering community engagement and well-
being.
