Project Details
This 11,485 square foot, design-build project involved the overhaul of an existing arena and curling club. The new addition encompassed a 4,800 square foot renovated area.
The Challenge
The existing facility was over 34 years old, which meant this was a highly anticipated and long awaited project for the township. Through many meetings with township council and over twenty-five design revisions based on various user group recommendations, a floor plan was set.
The site was very constricted and we also had to accommodate its attached neighbour, the Plattsville Curling Club. The addition involved a reconfiguration and renovation of the curling club and included an entire new refrigeration plant, a new entrance with a separate parking lot and renovation to the existing change rooms.
Not only did we have to complete the work in less than five months prior to the beginning of the hockey season, we also had to finish up before the curling season commenced.
The Ball Solution
We kept the trades organized and cognizant of the schedule on a daily basis. Along with quality assurance programs, the Ball system of organization and construction task-phasing ensured the project was finished on time and was of the highest quality.
With safety as a priority, we implemented our own daily practices, policies and bi-weekly meetings and audits as part of the Joint Health and Safety Committee. There were also extra safety orientations for the new trades on site. Happily, there was no time lost due to injury.
This facility was available two weeks early to allow for a public skate. Everything was completed in time for the hockey and curling seasons.
